Finals will open and close the second night in Belgrade, Serbia. Four individual finals will open the night before the women’s 800 free and the mixed medley relay close the night, with semifinals in between.
Hungary looks to stand on the medal table in the first event of the night after taking the top two spots in semifinals of the women’s 200 back. Dora Molnar was the only swimmer under the 2:10 mark swimming a 2:09.67 and is ahead of teammate Eszter Szabo Feltothy.
After breaking the Greece National Record in the 50 fly yesterday, Stergios Marios Bilas will look to capture the European crown tonight. Greece currently stands at the top of the medal table with 1 gold and 1 bronze.
No women got under the 54-second mark in prelims of the 100 free but Barbora Seemanova of Czech Republic swam to the top seed for finals with a 53.95. She holds the National Record in the event with a 53.68 from the 2021 European Championships. She has also been on a roll recently, setting numerous national records in the last month including the 200 free, 400 free, and 200 IM at the end of May. Looking to challenge Seemanova tonight is Hungary’s Nikolett Padar who blasted a 1:55.87 on the anchor leg in the women’s 4×200 free relay last night.
The men’s 100 breast will conclude the first group of finals. Melvin Imoudu of Germany holds the top seed as he swam a 59.28 in semifinals. He was one of five men under the 1:00 mark in the event although Andrius Sidlauskas of Lithuania was also under the mark in prelims with a 59.36 before swimming a 1:00.18 in semifinals.
The first semifinal of the night will be the women’s 100 breast. Anastasia Gorbenko of Israel broke her own National Record to post the top time of prelims in a 1:06.15 but has scratched the event for tonight. This means that Estonia’s Eneli Jefimova is now the top seed after swimming a 1:06.67 this morning. She looks to set herself up to capture Estonia’s first European title tomorrow night.
Former World Record holder David Popovici led the way through prelims of the 100 free swimming a 47.90 and was the only sub-48 mark of the morning. Serbia’s Andrej Barna clocked the 2nd fastest swim of the morning with a 48.18. A pair of Hungarians with Nandor Nemeth and Kristof Milak come in as the 3rd and 4th seeds tonight. Two years ago, Popovici won the event in a World Record while Milak was 2nd in the event.
Swimmers in the women’s 50 fly semifinals will look to crack the 26-second mark tonight as no swimmers were under the time in prelims. Top seed from Sweden Sara Junevik swam to a 26.01.
Switzerland’s Roman Mityukov just missed the podium in the 200 back two years ago finishing 4th but is the top seed heading into semifinals after swimming a 1:57.19. Israel’s David Gerchik is the #2 seed tonight after swimming a personal best time of a 1:57.48, sneaking under the Olympic Qualifying time of a 1:57.50.
The women’s 800 free final will feature Deniz Ertan as the top seed. Ertan competed collegiately this past season for Arizona State. She will swim next to Great Britain’s Fleur Lewis who swam a 8:38.33 in prelims.
The mixed medley relay will conclude the night. Poland enters as the top seed and was just ahead of Greece this morning.
