Alexander Zverev has very bizarre and awkward situation in Wimbledon press

on

World No. 4 Alexander Zverev found himself in a bizarre and awkward situation following his Wimbledon second-round win over Marcos Giron.

On Thursday evening, recent French Open runner-up Zverev safely progressed into the third round at The Championships after sealing a 6-2 6-1 6-4 win over 46th-ranked Giron.

But when the 27-year-old German entered the press room, no one had a question for him. After realizing that the journalists weren’t going to ask the two-time Grand Slam finalist anything, the moderator stepped in to save the day.

“Alex, how would you assess your level today?” the moderator asked Zverev.

Zverev gave a 17-word response: “It was good, good match. Good level. All in all, [I’m] happy with being through in straight sets.”

Zverev plays next against Cameron Norrie

For a place in the Wimbledon round-of-16, Zverev will play against world No. 42 Norrie, who upset 28th-ranked Jack Draper 7-6 (3) 6-4 7-6 (6).

Just two years ago, Norrie was a Wimbledon semifinalist and also a top-10 player. But so far this season, the former world No. 8 hasn’t played that well and that’s why he is now ranked just outside the top-40.

However, Norrie managed to cause an upset on Thursday and now his confidence levels have improved going into the Zverev match.

“I’ve lost a lot of close matches recently, so it’s nice to win one in a Grand Slam. I’m building, but it doesn’t get any easier. I’m playing Zverev in the next one. I’m going to have to keep raising my level. I’ve never beaten him, so it’s a really tough draw for me,” Norrie said of facing Zverev.

When Zveren and Norrie clash against each other on Saturday, it will be their sixth meeting. Heading into the match, Zverev owns a perfect 5-0 head-to-head against the 28-year-old Briton and he again enters the match as the favorite to end on the winning side.
