Bernhard Langer is still playing below his age

Back on the fairways since the beginning of May, the ageless Bernhard Langer wasted no time in getting back into his familiar groove! During Saturday’s second round of the Principal Charity Classic at the Wakonda Club course in Des Moines, Iowa, the 66-year-old German golfer set a new record score.

Despite not being fully recovered from his torn Achilles tendon, an injury that required surgery and forced him to miss what was supposed to be his final appearance at the Masters in mid-April, Langer managed to card a remarkable 63 in Des Moines, Iowa, on the American senior circuit!

His impressive performance placed him just one stroke behind the leaders, Australian Rod Pampling and South African Ernie Els, both 12 years his junior and both former winners of the Augusta Masters!

After a front-nine score of 31, featuring four birdies and an eagle, Langer continued his second round with three birdies on the back nine, finishing two shots better than Pampling and moving up to 3rd place going into the final round.

“It always feels good to play well, and it’s pretty special to beat my age by three strokes so soon after my Achilles tendon surgery,” said Langer. “I’ve had good starts in the last few tournaments I played, but I haven’t finished very well because I feel my hip and back getting stiffer as the day goes on. I’m very happy to have managed to finish with three birdies today.”

Having finished 34th in the Senior PGA Championship won by Richard Bland last week, Langer now has a chance to add a 47th victory on the PGA Tour Champions to his incredible record this Sunday.

It’s worth noting that Thomas Levet, also competing in this event, posted a second-round score of 75 for a two-day total of +6, placing him in 75th position, twenty strokes behind the leading duo.
