Every major DFW sports team is leaving the Dallas Cowboys behind.

The Dallas Mavericks are headed to the NBA Finals.

Thursday night saw the Mavs take care of the Minnesota Timberwolves and in the process emerge victorious from of the Western Conference Finals. On the other side of things the Boston Celtics swept the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals and now we have to wait a week for the championship series to begin. Oh well.

But we are here today to discuss the Mavs side of this and how they have reached the title match for their particular sport. The Mavs are actually the second major sports team from DFW to accomplish this in the last 365 days as the Texas Rangers not only reached the World Series last fall but won the whole thing. It was their first title in franchise history.

The Mavericks have a title that is now 13 years old but are clearly looking to add to it. As it is often said you can only win trophies when you put yourself in consistent position to do so and while they reached the WCF two years ago this is the first trip back to The Finals for the Mavericks since that famed 2011 season.

Elsewhere in DFW the Dallas Stars are two wins away themselves from heading to the Stanley Cup Final. The Stars reached the final stage four years ago but ultimately went home without eternal glory. They are currently tied at two games apiece with the Edmonton Oilers so it is a bit stressful right now, but if they win the series then three of the four DFW teams who play major sports will have all reached the final stage of their respective sport since last fall when the Rangers did it.

There is only one outlier… the Dallas Cowboys.

As you can see the Stars are at the moment still in their own semifinal matchup. But at the very least they have reached the penultimate stage. And more than anything what is visible is how much the Cowboys are trailing their neighboring teams in terms of opportunities for parades in the metroplex.

It is frustrating that the Cowboys cannot even reach the NFC Championship Game certainly, but watching their cohorts do it and with different versions of teams very far apart in time suggests that it is not as difficult as the Cowboys make it seem. It is of course very difficult to have success in any sport, but existing as the one who manages to be different in this very important way is quite the look for Jerry Jones’ organization.

To be clear this is a wonderful time for those who follow and support all DFW teams. The Rangers did it and now the Mavericks might and soon enough the Stars may have an opportunity as well. Sports fans dream of this kind of nirvana.

But to say it would be different if the Cowboys did it is a significant understatement. If the Cowboys even reached an NFC title game it would feel like an all-time victory at this point given their enormous drought.

Kudos to the Rangers, Mavericks and Stars for what they have done in their respective seasons, particularly on the road.

In case you forgot, the Dallas Cowboys won a road playoff game last year for the first time since the 1992 NFC Championship Game. Good for them.

At least they have that.
