Dutch golfer Luiten wins appeal for Paris 2024

on

Joost Luiten has won a legal appeal against the Dutch Olympic Committee which excluded him from Paris 2024 because he “could not win a medal”. He, however, will be there at Le Golf National.

The professional had filed a complaint in recent days against the decision of the Orange officials. The Palace had excluded him from the Dutch selection like his colleague Darius Van Driel and the proette Dewi Weber. The Dutch Committee had introduced highly selective criteria. In fact, what was required was a placement within the 27th place in the Olympic ranking or a top 8 in a DP World Tour competition with five of the top 50 golfers in the world ranking or ten of the top one hundred in the field.

Joost Luiten, statements

“The Olympic rings have returned to color again. I won the case in court and I will participate in the Olympics”: this is how Luiten communicated the outcome of the legal proceedings.

As mentioned, despite being in the top sixty professionals in the Olympic ranking, Luiten had been excluded like Van Driel and Weber. The motivation was very un-Olympic: those three “did not have a reasonable chance of ranking among the best men and women” according to the Dutch committee.

The Games of the XXXIII Olympiad (in French Jeux de la XXXIIIe olympiade), informally known as Paris 2024, will be held in Paris, France, from 26 July to 11 August 2024, exactly 100 years since the last time the city hosted the event.

The assignment of the event was made official on 13 September 2017 during the 131st IOC Session held in Lima, Peru. Paris will become the second city, after London (1908, 1948 and 2012), to host the Summer Olympic Games three times, after the editions of 1900 and 1924.

In full line with the Olympic Agenda 2020, approved by the IOC in 2014 and aimed at making the organization of the event more economically sustainable, the 2024 Olympic Games will make extensive use of existing or temporary facilities and the only facilities permanent sports to be built from scratch will be the Porte de la Chapelle Arena, located in the La Chapelle district of Paris, the Saint-Denis aquatic center and the Le Bourget climbing stadium.

On 12 July 2022 the organizing committee announced that the shooting/flying competitions, originally scheduled to take place in a temporary facility in La Courneuve, would be hosted at the existing national shooting center in Châteauroux, located 250 km south of Paris.
