Good Morning Broncos Country! This morning we are talking about how the Broncos run defense should be better this upcoming season.

Good Morning Broncos Country! I hope you had a fun and safe Independence Day.

This morning, let’s talk about the improvement, at least on paper, of the Denver Broncos run defense. Last season, this unit was gashed throughout the season and it really hurt them as they attempted to make a postseason push. While the Broncos did not make too many splashy offseason moves, they did make a few additions that should really help their run defense this upcoming season.

One of their more underrated additions was signing former Saints defensive lineman, Malcolm Roach. The 26-year-old defensive lineman was one of the better-run defenders in the league last season according to Pro Football Focus and should compete for the starting nose tackle position. At the very least, he figures to be a run-stuffing lineman who can substitute in when needed or potentially even be a starter.

Adding Roach was a fine addition and we hoped him alone would help the Broncos run defense improve this upcoming season. However, the team did not stop there. During the draft, the Broncos swung a trade with the Jets for defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers. While he is known for pass rush, he is a solid run defender and is much better than anyone the Broncos had playing opposite of Zach Allen last season.

Speaking of Allen, he was one of the Broncos best defensive players last season and did it with not a whole lot around him. Now, with the team adding some more talent and depth, he should have an even better and more impactful season in 2024.

As for veteran D.J. Jones, he needs to show he can be the run-defending presence the team thought he was when they signed him. It is not a guarantee he makes the team, but if he does, he is either a starter at nose tackle or a valuable rotational piece who will need to improve against the run.

The Broncos put an emphasis on improving their run defense this offseason and I think they did that. They still have some concerns like the edge rusher consistently setting the edge, but overall, this unit looks much improved from last season, at least on paper.
