Taking care of business

There isn’t a whole lot of news coming out of the Minnesota Vikings’ team facilities at the moment, but there was a big moment today for one of the players that they drafted last month.

The team has announced that cornerback Khyree Jackson has signed his rookie contract with the team. This means that five of the team’s seven draft choices are now, officially, under contract.

Jackson was the Vikings’ fourth-round pick out of the University of Oregon in last month’s selection meeting. He’s had an interesting trip to get to where he is, as he dropped out of the first community college he attended and went to work at a supermarket in Maryland. In 2019, after two years of not playing football, he found himself at Fort Scott Community College. He then played at East Mississippi Community College and, from there, made the jump to the University of Alabama. After two years with the Crimson Tide, he went out west to Oregon, where he was a First-Team All-Pac-12 performer in his final season for the Ducks.

Jackson definitely qualifies as a bigger corner, measuring in at 6’4”. He’ll join a fairly young defensive backfield in Minnesota with the hopes that he’ll be able to step in and contribute sooner rather than later.

With Jackson being signed, the only two players that haven’t inked their rookie deals yet are the team’s two first-round selections: quarterback J.J. McCarthy and edge defender Dallas Turner. Given that there isn’t a whole lot of room to negotiate rookie contracts, those deals will likely be done fairly soon.

Congratulations to Khyree Jackson on signing his first NFL contract!
