Monday Cheese Curds: Packers are fortunate to have logjam at wide receiver

Too many playmakers is never a bad thing.

An old saying goes that if you have two quarterbacks, you actually have none. That cliché is usually attributed to legendary NFL coach and commentator John Madden, and the Green Bay Packers are fortunate to have an unquestioned one.

But the spirit of that axiom does not apply to wide receivers, players to whom the quarterback distributes the football. An ideal group of pass-catchers is a deep one, with elite top-end talent to be sure, but with a variety of skill sets and qualities.

The Packers are blessed to have just that after investing so heavily in the position in the 2022 and 2023 NFL Drafts. Big speed demon? Christian Watson — check. Reliable possession receiver? Romeo Doubs — check. Quick, explosive slot receiver? Jayden Reed. Elite route-runner? Dontayvion Wicks.

Outside of this quartet, there are skills farther down the depth chart as well. Bo Melton’s late-season explosion cemented him as a contender to contribute this year. Malik Heath had some big moments as a rookie last season as well. And there are still players like Grant DuBose and Samori Touré who have chances to contribute.

Perhaps no other team in the NFL has the depth at this position to match what the Packers can roll out there, from 1 through 5 and even deeper down the roster. It’s a credit to the team’s scouting, its drafting strategy, and its ability to quickly develop players at the position that they are in this spot heading into 2024.

If the Packers truly are contenders this year — if they make the Super Bowl or are one of the NFC’s top seeds, Brian Gutekunst should be a top option for Executive of the Year.

Roster crunch: Will the Packers keep 6 or 7 wide receivers? | Packers Wire
One of Gutekunst’s biggest questions this summer will be how many players to keep at the deep wide receiver position. Four players are locks with another (Melton) feeling like almost a sure-fire pick. And yes, there’s talent beyond that group, but would they really need to keep more than those five?

One of those locks at receiver, Doubs bounced back from a relatively quiet final month in the regular season with huge playoff performances, and his head coach praised his offseason work effusively at the end of spring practices.

Meanwhile, this former Packers receiver and his family escaped a fire started by his Tesla charger recently. Cobb, his wife and kids, and his dog are all okay, thankfully.
