The Browns roster has an open spot after releasing Lonnie Phelps

We have officially hit the month of July which means NFL training camps start this month. Unfortunately for fans of the Cleveland Browns, getting to see their team in person is very limited this year during camp.

Beyond hoping players remain healthy and out of trouble, unlike recently released DE Lonnie Phelps, there isn’t a lot for Browns fans to look forward to until camp starts. With the release of Phelps, Cleveland has an open roster spot to fill. We looked at the seven former Browns still available in NFL free agency on Sunday.

Now, given that Phelps was an edge rusher, we take a look at four defensive ends that could fill that roster spot:

  • Yannick Ngakoue – A big name, Ngakoue has bounced around the last few seasons but continues to be able to put pressure on the quarterback. While he’ll never be a quality run-stopper, rotating Ngakoue in on big third downs could be a fun terror for DC Jim Schwartz.
  • Jerry Hughes – A more complete player than Ngakoue, the 35-year-old Hughes played limited snaps last year but still had three sacks, four tackles for loss and three quarterback hits. A smart player, Hughes may fit situationally and help in case of injuries.
  • Shaq Lawson – Never a huge accumulator of stats, Lawson’s playing time has dropped the last four seasons but he’s still a rosterable player with solid experience at 30 years old.
  • Rasheen Green – The youngest player on the list, Green might fit a little better to replace Phelps, who was going into his second season. Green had 6.5 sacks and 15 QB hits in 2021, perhaps Schwartz could unlock that player once again.

Which free agent edge rusher do you think is the best fit to replace Phelps on the Browns 90-man roster? If you have a better idea for that roster spot, jump down to the comment section and share with us
