Rory McIlroy’s victory, commemorative plaque

For his return to competition scheduled for next week at the Scottish Open ($9 million in prize money) after his mishap during the last round of the US Open near Pinehurst just a month ago, Rory McIlroy will be able to admire the commemorative plaque placed by the Renaissance Club on the 18th fairway. A magical 2-iron shot which allowed him to win in front of the Scotsman Robert MacIntyre.

As is often done in the world of golf, a plaque commemorating the fabulous 2-iron shot slammed by Rory McIlroy into the wind 180 meters from the 18th green of the Renaissance Club, host of the Scottish Open, was installed at the location even at the start of the week.

The current world No. 2 will be able to admire it when he reaches the venue, between North Berwick and Gullane where the Genesis Scottish Open, a $9 million Rolex Series co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour.

Thanks to this feat which entered the history of the European Tour… or even a little more, Rory McIlroy won at -15 (265), beating the Scotsman Robert MacIntyre to the wire who nevertheless thought he had done the hardest for a few minutes before with his superb card of 64 (-6).

“It’s certainly my best shot of the year, it (the ball) did exactly what I wanted,” said the Northern Irish golfer a few minutes after his victory.

In 2006 he won the European Amateur. McIlroy turned professional in September 2007 before competing in the British Masters. That year he finished 95th on the European Tour earnings chart. In January 2008 he entered the top 200 of the world player list. He tied after 72 holes of the 2008 European Masters, but ended up losing the playoff. He finished the year with six top 10s on the European Tour and placed 39th on the world list.

In January 2009, McIlroy achieved his first professional victory at the Dubai Desert Classic, reaching 16th place on the world list. In the WGC Match Play, he defeated Louis Oosthuizen, Hunter Mahan and Tim Clark, ending up defeated in the quarterfinals by Geoff Ogilvy, who ultimately won the tournament. In his first appearance at the Augusta Masters, he made the cut and finished tied for 20th.
