The humility of number one. It’s been a few weeks since the historic day when Jannik Sinner became the first Italian tennis player to occupy the first position in the world ranking, but everything has remained unchanged.

His character, his determination, his reserve. Everything as before, even if now the pressure on the 22-year-old from San Candido has definitely increased. Engaged in these days at Wimbledon, the blue is certainly among the favorites for the final success, but the path to the British Grand Slam final reserved him an unpleasant surprise: the derby in the second round with Matteo Berrettini.

In an interview with SuperTennis, the coach of Sinner Simone Vagnozzi told the young blue champion, revealing his habits and talking about their relationship and the next challenge with Berrettini.

Simone Vagnozzi on Jannik Sinner’s attitude

On a rainy day, Simone Vagnozzi joked about Jannik Sinner’s weatherman skills. “He’s also a good weatherman. Luckily we already trained… It was Jannik’s decision, he called us and asked us to play at 11.

We trained with Sonego and then just after it started raining. In the afternoon, he will do physiotherapy and try to recover as much energy as possible for tomorrow. Tonight? I don’t think he goes to the disco. We go home and he will cook for everyone, but the menu you have to ask him”.

On the slide in the game with Hanfmann that scared all the Italian fans. “Luckily everything is ok, he trained well; on the grass the slide can happen and yesterday it was very wet and the court was slippery.

When we say that the first rounds on grass are complicated we say it also for that reason… had it happened to me the game would have ended there… he instead continued and the fourth set was very good and allowed him to leave the field with good feelings” coach.

In view of the derby with Berrettini, Vagnozzi said: “The routine is always the same, even if you prepare a match against a boy you know well. There is a bit of derby air even if they are used to playing with each other now, there are so many Italians in the draw that you have to get used almost every day to preparing for a derby”.

Despite the new position in the world ranking, Sinner remained the same. “No, he’s the same guy he’s always been. Of course, now we set ourselves new goals, always trying to improve… won the first Slam and became the world’s number 1, now the goal is to try to stay up there as much as possible and try to win more Slams.”
