Team India is all set to kick off their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Wednesday (June 5). This will be India’s first international game in the T20 format since their win in the home series against Afghanistan earlier this year. In anticipation of the match, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar shared his insights on the likely playing XI that captain Rohit Sharma might pick for the encounter against Ireland.

Sunil Gavaskar’s playing XI for India

Speaking to Star Sports, Gavaskar suggested a formidable opening pair with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. This choice emphasizes a power-packed start with two of India’s most experienced and successful batter, setting a strong foundation for the innings. The decision to not opt for a left-right combination, which many teams prefer, underscores Gavaskar’s belief in maximizing the powerplay overs with proven performers.

A notable surprise in Gavaskar’s lineup is Yashasvi Jaiswal at No. 3. Traditionally an opener for India and the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Jaiswal has the task of adapting to a new role. This strategic placement could test Jaiswal’s versatility and ability to anchor the innings in the middle order, providing stability after the dynamic opening duo.

Middle order stability

The middle order, featuring Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya, combines explosive hitting with match-winning capabilities. Suryakumar’s ability to play innovative shots and adapt to different situations makes him a valuable asset. Pant, known for his aggressive approach and game-changing potential, is expected to provide the necessary firepower. Pandya, with his all-round abilities, adds depth and balance to the lineup.

All-rounders and spin department

Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube are pivotal in Gavaskar’s lineup, offering both batting depth and bowling options. Jadeja’s all-round prowess, especially his left-arm spin and fielding, is crucial. Dube, slotted at No. 8, is an unconventional choice but highlights Gavaskar’s confidence in his lower-order hitting and bowling capabilities. Kuldeep Yadav, as the primary spinner, brings variety and the ability to take crucial wickets in the middle overs.

Pace attack

The pace attack is led by Jasprit Bumrah, with Mohammed Siraj as his partner. Despite Arshdeep Singh‘s impressive show in the warm-up game against Bangladesh, Gavaskar’s preference for Siraj indicates a reliance on experience and proven skills. Bumrah’s pace and death-over expertise, combined with Siraj’s ability to generate bounce and movement, form a potent bowling duo.
