SUPERCROSS STATISTICS: HOW DOES LAWRENCE COMPARE TO THE GREATS?

Through the years of Supercross racing, a few rookies have stood out among the rest with Jett Lawrence being one of them. This year Jett Lawrence had a stand-out rookie season but how does he fair against some of the greats? We take a dive into a few rider’s rookie years to see just how Jett Lawrence stacks up. Included in the list are Jeremy McGrath, Chad Reed, Ryan Dungey, Damon Bradshaw, and of course Jett Lawrence.

MCGRATH MAINTAINS THE POSITION OF MOST SUCCESSFUL ROOKIE

Jeremy McGrath’s rookie season in the 250 class (modern-day 450) was in 1993. The season consisted of sixteen races and McGrath was able to capture ten wins. He accomplished this feat on board a Honda CR 250 which he rode to an average finish of 2.2, his worst finish of the season being a ninth place. McGrath was able to win consecutively four times and was able to wrap up the championship with two races left to go in the season.

CHAD REED HAD THE BEST AVERAGE FINISH

Chad Reed was highly successful in his rookie year.

Chad Reed was another rookie who moved up to the 250 class and excelled in his first season. During the 2003 Supercross season which was a sixteen-round series, Reed won a total of eight times but was on the podium in fourteen of the rounds. His worst result was a sixth place which makes him one of the most consistent rookies of all time. Reed had a total of six consecutive wins and an average finish of 2.06. Still, he would come up short in the championship by only seven points to Ricky Carmichael that year.

THE MOST TOP FIVES IN A SEASON

Ryan Dungey was one of the most consistent rookies of all time.

In 2010 Ryan Dungey stepped into the 450 class and into the record books. In a seventeen-round series, Ryan Dungey was able to capture six wins but he was also one of the most consistent riders, placing in the top five sixteen times that year. He had two consecutive wins that year and an average finish of 2.5. Ryan was able to win the championship that year with his worst finish only being sixth place which was the only round he was out of the top five.

TAKING IT BACK

Damon Bradshaw’s rookie season did not pan out to the same caliber as some of the others on the list. In 1990 they had an eighteen-round series where Bradshaw only competed in sixteen of the rounds. Though missing the two rounds he still was able to accomplish quite a bit in the short time. Bradshaw had five wins in the season and seven podiums throughout. He finished eighth in the championship with his worst finish being twentieth place. This put his average results to an 8.3. Despite this, he was still one of the most successful rookies to race in Supercross.

YOUR 2024 450 SUPERCROSS CHAMPION

After the 2024 Supercross season, Jett Lawrence puts himself on the list of greatest rookies in the sport. 

Jett Lawrence excelled this year winning eight times in seventeen-round series. He was able to grab three wins in a row this season and finish in the top five thirteen times. This season Jett Lawrence’s worst finish was a ninth place but was still one of the more consistent riders on the track. He collected three wins in a row this season and had an average result of 3.4. Jett Lawrence’s record sets him in the list of best rookies ever and will continue as the series steps into motocross.
