It’s 5 o’clock somewhere…

The 5 o’clock club is published from time to time during the season, and aims to provide a forum for reader-driven discussion at a time of day when there isn’t much NFL news being published. Feel free to introduce topics that interest you in the comments below.

I set the over/under. You vote. Feel free to explain why in the comments.

Mariota was signed for a reason — maybe several reasons. We don’t really know whether Jayden Daniels will be ready to start by Week 1, and Dan Quinn has said that there’s no timeline; Daniels will play when he’s ready. Of course, the backup quarterback saw action in every one of Ron Rivera’s four seasons in Washington, but Rivera isn’t here anymore.

Jayden Daniels

Daniels is known for his running ability.

As a rookie in Washington, RG3 ran for 815 yards and 7 rushing TDs.

The last time Kliff Kingsbury had a rookie QB in the NFL, Kyler Murray rushed for 544 yards and 4 TDs. A year later, in his 2nd season, Murray ran for 819 yards and 11 TDs.

Terry McLaurin

McLaurin has posted total receiving yards of:

  • 2019 – 919
  • 2020 – 1,118
  • 2021 – 1,053
  • 2022 – 1,191
  • 2023 – 1,002

Terry should be the focal point of an offense that everyone hopes will be more explosive and productive with Kliff Kingsbury taking over from Eric Bieniemy, and with Jayden Danials at QB, but if Jahan Dotson and Luke McCaffrey step up, then Terry could actually see his targets and yards go down.

Terry McLaurin total yards (1,161)

Jahan Dotson TD catches (8.5)
Fan vote: under Actual: under (4)

Fan vote: over Actual: under (40.75)

Jahan Dotson

Dotson started off red hot in his rookie season, catching 4 TD passes in his first 4 games before a hamstring injury sidelined him for 5 games.

Later in his rookie season, he caught TDs in three consecutive weeks (Games 13, 14, 15) before being held scoreless in the final two games of the 2022 season, and finished with 523 yards and 7 TDs in 12 games.

2023 was a bit of a disappointment for Dotson. He finished with 518 yards and 4 TDs.

2024 will see Dotson learning his 3rd offensive system, from his 3rd OC and his 3rd starting QB in his 3rd year as a professional.

Olamide Zaccheaus

Zaccheaus played sparingly for the Eagles last year. His offensive coordinator in 2023 was Brian Johnson, who is now the passing game coordinator for the Commanders.

From 2020 to 2022 with the Falcons, Zaccheaus was targeted 32, 53, and 61 times, respectively. In 2023 with the Eagles, Zaccheaus was targeted just 20 times.

Oh, did I mention that he can block a defensive back?

There’s no guarantee that Zaccheaus makes the Commanders roster in 2024. He will be competing with Jamison Crowder, Dax Milne, Dyami Brown, Brycen Tremayne, Mitchell Tinsley, Kazmeir Allen and others for a backup role behind Terry, Jahan and Luke.
