Toronto Ultra Reveals Overwatch and TFT Rosters for EWC

on

Toronto Ultra will be breaking onto the stage at the Esports World Cup in a major way. Hours ago, the organisation revealed rosters for Overwatch 2 and Teamfight Tactics, with a Call of Duty roster yet to be confirmed. Many brands are going down this path thanks to the EWC’s Club Championship category that will award massive cash prizes based on orgs placing high across multiple esports games.

Recently, it was confirmed that both Warzone and Modern Warfare 3 will be appearing at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh. However, what hasn’t been made clear are the rules around teams – it’s not yet known if CDL organisations will step up to the plate at the EWC or if they’ll need to represent their ‘parent’ brands. For instance, Atlanta FaZe could represent FaZe Clan, while OpTic Texas could represent OpTic Gaming, and so on.

Toronto Ultra has fielded a TFT and an Overwatch 2 roster ready for the Esports World Cup. Over eight weeks this summer, Riyadh will play host to more than a dozen esports games, with teams from all around the world flying into the country to try and win a chunk of the record-high prize pool worth $60 million.

Here are the teams that Toronto Ultra has assembled:

Overwatch 2

  • Vega
  • Someone
  • Mer1t
  • Sugarfree
  • Rupal

Teamfight Tactics

  • Relic
  • Robinsongz
  • Rereplay
  • Maikel

In the Overwatch 2 category, every player except for Rupal comes from Toronto Defiant, the Overwatch Champions Series squad. However, for the EWC, the team will be flying the purple banner of Toronto Ultra, for reasons that haven’t been made clear.

At the EWC, there will be a $1 million prize pool for Overwatch 2 and a $550,000 pool for TFT. It’s a drop in the ocean compared to some of the pools arranged for other games. For instance, the PUBG portion of the tournament has a $2 million pool, as does Rainbow Six Siege. Call of Duty is close behind with a $1.8 million prize pool.

Despite widespread issues around the foundation of the Esports World Cup, it seems to be shaping up to be something special. There’s a huge amount of interest in the eight-week-long event, and organisations are becoming increasingly invested. It’s certainly the most ambitious esports event ever, and it’ll effectively turn dozens of organisations into million-dollar brands overnight.
