What is Smite in Minecraft?

on

Have you ever wondered what Smite is in Minecraft? You’re far from the only person to ask about this enchantment. Some enchantments are straightforward, like Sharpness, Fire Aspect, Unbreaking, Blast Protection, or Mending. Others are unclear based on the name. If any Minecraft player is unsure of what the enchantment will do for their item, they can’t apply it. It might be useless or it might not be what they want. Before wasting XP levels, it’s best to know exactly what an enchantment, such as Smite, will do.

What Does Smite Do in Minecraft?

First of all, what Smite is in Minecraft is an enchantment for a sword or axe (in Java Edition. Bedrock Edition axes cannot be given the enchantment). It cannot be applied to a pickaxe, a shovel, a chestplate, a trident, or anything else. Even though those can be used to attack, especially the trident, it cannot get the Smite enchantment. Smite increases the damage done to undead mobs according to the official Minecraft Wiki.

Fortunately, there are a lot of undead mobs. In fact, the majority of hostile mobs do qualify as undead:

  • Skeletons
  • Zombies
  • Zombie Villagers
  • Withers
  • Wither Skeletons
  • Bogged
  • Zombified Piglins
  • Skeleton Horses
  • Zombie Horses
  • Strays
  • Husks
  • Phantoms
  • Drowned
  • Zoglins

Sharpness is the all-encompassing counterpart. It increases the damage done to any mob. Smite is more limited, but it still applies to a wide variety. For each level of the enchantment, you can deal 1.25 extra hearts of damage. There are five total levels, so a diamond sword with Smite V on it can deal 23 damage. Additionally, an iron sword with Smite III on it can deal 16.5 damage. This also works on axes, so a Diamond axe, for example, can deal 26 damage with Smite V on it.
