Wimbledon: Coco Gauff forgets 2023 disappointment with ruthless win in return

on

Coco Gauff is off to an outstanding start to her Wimbledon run as the American tennis star dropped a total of three games en route to completing a 6-1 6-2 win over fellow American Caroline Dolehide.

Gauff, who was left dejected and crushed after exiting Wimbledon in the first round last year, made sure something like that would not repeat this year as the second-seeded American routinely handled the business against world No. 51 Dolehide in an hour and five minutes of play.

On Wednesday, Gauff will return to action to take on Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni, who defeated Olga Danilovic 7-5 6-1 in her Wimbledon main draw debut for her first Grand Slam win. When Gauff, 21, and 19-year-old Todoni meet, it will be their first meeting. But even though Gauff probably doesn’t know much about Todoni, she will still enter the match as the huge favorite to beat the Romanian qualifier.

How Gauff beat Dolehide?

Gauff made a commanding start to the match, breaking Dolehide in the very first game of the match before claiming two other breaks in the fifth and seventh games to dominantly seal the opener.

After winning the last four games of the first set, Gauff also started the second set with back-to-back breaks and a 4-0 lead. Down by a set and two breaks, Dolehide got her first break point of the match and realized to put an end to the 2023 US Open champion’s run of eight consecutive games won.

Then, Dolehide also served out the sixth game to further cut the deficit to 2-4 but it didn’t impact Gauff at all, who remained fully locked in and still went on to claim a dominant win after serving out the seventh game and then breaking Dolehide again in the eighth game to wrap up the match.

For Gauff, this was the best possible start and something that will certainly raise her confidence levels.
