Xavier Woods is working hard to make the WWE Speed title matter

While it’s a fun enough concept, it would be hard to argue that WWE’s exclusive-to-X (the former Twitter) Speed matters much in the grand scheme of the company’s storytelling.

There was initial interest in the show, which features matches with three minute time limits where wrestlers compete for a five-minute shot at the Speed champion, when it debuted shortly before WrestleMania 40. But the biggest news to come out of it since was when Ricochet dropped the title to Andrade — and that was mostly because it happened right around when we learned Ricochet had essentially given notice to WWE.

On the episode that dropped today (July 3), Xavier Woods defeated NXT’s Nathan Frazer to win the latest #1 contender tournament. The New Day star will now face El Ídolo on Friday:

And as he is wont to do, Woods (aka Austin Creed) is putting in work to make that match as meaningful as possible.

“You know your boy does not lose in tournaments. I just became the #1 contender for the Speed Championship. Some of you might be wondering what that even means — the Speed Championship is another championship that WWE has to offer. You become champion, you make more money. You become champion, that is how you build your legacy.

“Yes, I am a tag team specialist. Yes, I am a member of the greatest tag team to ever exist in this industry. Yes. But the problem that I’ve had for years, for 11 years — the 11 years since I’ve been on the main roster, to be exact — is that I have been unable to hold a singles championship.

“So for me, this is just not a championship to parade around on Twitter, to parade around in the back and show everybody how cool I am. This is a championship that will help me begin to define my legacy. It’s soon about to be the era of Xavier Woods.”

Woods reposted that promo, adding:

Winning the #WweSpeed  title is step one. This is the kickstart that I need so I can start moving closer to the intercontinental title and beyond…

Good stuff, from a man we’ve been calling on WWE to strap up with a singles belt for a while now.

It didn’t work out last time, but he did have his King of the Ring dream come true… so as The New Day reminds us to, we’re gonna stay positive.

Think X will be Speed champ (the match taped last Friday, but don’t spoil it for us)? Would that make you more interested in the show?
