Last night’s WWE RAW was supposed to see Baron Corbin reveal the Special Guest Referee for his match with WWE Universal Champion Seth Rollins at Sunday’s WWE Stomping Grounds PPV, but the show ended with no referee named.
There had been some speculation on a possible special ref announcement on tonight’s SmackDown, the final show before Stomping Grounds, but Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that this likely is not happening.
It looks like we will find out who the heel referee is on the day of the PPV, possibly right as the match is about to begin. There’s been no news on what match will close Stomping Grounds – Corbin vs. Rollins or the Steel Cage Match with Dolph Ziggler and WWE Champion Kofi Kingston, but WWE could always end the show with a big surprise if they have a top name in mind for the referee role.
It’s possible that WWE held the referee announcement off until the day of the PPV to help draw interest to the event, which has been lacking as have ticket sales.
