As we reported this week, WWE has announced they are bringing back the King of the Ring tournament.
Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that the WWE does have an end game for this event. It’s being done to put over a wrestler, but his sources do not know who it is yet. They have already planned out who the final person will be.
As an interesting side note, Ricochet was called King Ricochet during his time in the indies. The King of the Ring tournament could be the WWE’s way of bringing that back. A lot of speculation has been that this tournament is being used to put over Baron Corbin.
“From what I understand, King of the Ring is being done for a specific purpose, which I presume is for somebody, but I don’t know who it is, one of the guys. God help us if it’s Baron Corbin, but it’s for one of the guyss. So I think that it’s more of something to push a guy as opposed to something from the outside.” – Dave Meltzer
King of the Ring will consist of sixteen people – 8 from RAW and 8 from Smackdown. RAW will be represented by Baron Corbin, Cesaro, Cedric Alexander, Drew McIntyre, Ricochet, Sami Zayn, Samoa Joe, and The Miz, while Smackdown will be represented by Ali, Andrade, Apollo Crews, Buddy Murphy, Chad Gable, Elias, Kevin Owens, and Shelton Benjamin. The last King of the Ring tournament was won by King Barrett in 2015 but the gimmick was quickly dropped. The final match will take place September 15th at Clash of the Champions in Charlotte, North Carolina.
