Mason was a productive member at the FCS level before making the jump to Coastal Carolina.

Micheal Mason is a native of Florence, South Carolina and starred at South Florence High School. He posted 100+ tackles in three consecutive seasons, all of which earned him an All-Region honor. As a senior, he capped his career with 119 tackles and 14 sacks. Over his final two seasons, he recorded 241 tackles and 25 sacks. After a productive career that somehow did not turn into many big collegiate offers, Mason chose to continue his career at Wofford University.

Mason broke out in his first season on campus with 10.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks en route to being named a Second-Team All-Southern Conference honoree despite starting just two games for the Terriers.

During the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign, Mason started all five games, posting 5.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, and two forced fumbles. He went on to be named First-Team All-SoCon for his efforts.

In 2021, Mason was limited to just eight games and six starts. He still posted a new career hight with 44 total tackles to go along with 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and two more forced fumbles. Those stats were enough to get him another nod to the All-SoCon Second Team. His final season at Wofford was capped by a 9.5-sack season that included 7.5 tackles for loss and 41 total tackles. That stat line earned him his second First-Team All-SoCon honor of his career.

With one year of eligibility left, Mason chose to grad transfer to Coastal Carolina University where he continued his notable production. In 13 games played, Mason notched seven sacks, 10.5 tackles for loss, one pass breakup, and a forced fumble.

Following the 2024 NFL Draft, Mason signed a UDFA contract with the Chargers

The Good

Was a successful player on the field for both Wofford and Coastal Carolina the second he stepped on the field at either school. Double-digit sacks as a freshman for the Terriers in 2019. Ended career with two different seasons with double-digit tackles for loss and three seasons with at least seven sacks.

Wins with a bull rush most of the time. Has a constant motor that allowed him to record a lot of cleanup sacks off the pressure from his teammates.

The Bad

May suffer from being too much of a ‘tweener at the next level. Built like a defensive tackle but at the weight of a 3-4 defensive end. Does not seem to have any counters in his pass rush plan. If he can’t out-muscle tackles through the edge, he become stuck on an island. Does not look overly-athletic and I can’t see him corralling quarterbacks with any sort of movement.

Odds of making the roster/What to expect in 2024?

Unless Mason finds a way to play above himself and out-perform some of the guys who have been here for several years, he’s not likely to break through to the active roster. In my opinion, he’d have to force the coaching staff into keeping him otherwise his profile does not tell us he’s a better investment than some of the other guys, including IPP player CJ Okoye.
