Patrick Emery Donovan was born on July 1st, 1953. He was chosen by the Dallas Cowboys during the fourth round of the 1975 NFL Draft, not as an offensive tackle, but as a defensive end. Our discussion yesterday mentioned the “Dirty Dozen,” the moniker given to the Cowboys’ 1975 draft class due to the 12 players selected, and Pat Donovan was one of them.

The Cowboys experienced success by transitioning defensive players to the offense, and Donovan was no exception. When Rayfield Wright got injured in 1977, Donovan stepped in as the right tackle. The following year, he shifted to the left side and was paired with Herbert Scott, forming a highly effective duo that was regarded among the top left offensive line tandems in the league at the time.

Donovan played a crucial role on the Cowboys offensive line and was selected to the Pro Bowl four times from 1979 to 1982; he is one of only five offensive tackles in club history to achieve this feat. After the 1983 season, Donovan underwent surgery to repair both shoulders and subsequently retired. Throughout his nine seasons with Dallas, he never missed a game and participated in 20 playoff matches, including six NFC Championships and three Super Bowls, ultimately winning a championship ring in Super Bowl XII.
