Iga Swiatek has a different strategy on grass

Iga Swiatek hopes to make his first big breakthrough at Wimbledon this season. The world number one still fails to shine on the green surface despite its huge level and overwhelming dominance over the rest of the courts.

The Pole explained that Wimbledon was a unique tournament and it was hard to predict who would be the favourite for the title: “I think it’s a very complicated tournament, you can’t build your fitness and your game to reach your best level at Wimbledon.

It’s a little different tournament. Players who do not arrive as favourites can win it, it can be won by any player. The opportunity is greater. It is true that this is a case similar to clay.

We have to take this tournament differently mentally. Normally, tennis players make a little more mistakes than on other surfaces. The ball is low, super fast and complicated. I think it’s more a question of mind, of the ability to adapt to the surface. The best fit player will win.”

Iga Swiatek also explained that she had made some improvements in her game to give herself a chance at All England Club: “At first it was complicated. I am glad I arrived early because there is a big difference between the grass we have in Poland and this one. Day after day, I gained in rhythm, I felt the ball better. This year we took things a little differently because of the number of games I played in the first half of the season. I could have played a tournament before Wimbledon, but I don’t know if I could have been in good shape until the end of the year.

You have to choose what’s best for the future. One of the goals was to win service and put pressure on service. I managed to do it on other surfaces, I hope it will be the same here.

Here it is even more important to have good first serve balls. I did well in training, but now I will test myself in a match with the added stress.

I hope that this progress will bear fruit. In addition to service, there is also movement and stopping before the strike. On this surface, it is impossible for me to slide.”
