Miami Dolphins make Calais Campbell signing official

Calais Campbell adds versatile skill-set to Dolphins defensive line.

Last Thursday, word leaked that the Miami Dolphins planned to sign 37-year-old former Pro Bowl defensive lineman, Calais Campbell, to a contract with the club. On Tuesday morning, the South Florida franchise made the signing official with the customary social media post.

Originally drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the second-round of the 2008 NFL Draft, Campbell will embark on his 17th season in the NFL while playing for the Dolphins in 2024. During his highly successful career — which has included stints with the Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons — Campbell has amassed 105.5 sacks in 244 games played. He also has 865 combined tackles, 17 forced fumbles, 13 fumble recoveries and three interceptions according to Pro Football Reference.

Campbell’s time in Baltimore overlapped with new Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver for two season. Despite playing a majority of his snaps at defense end in Atlanta during the 2023 season, his seasons with the Ravens and Weaver saw Campbell playing mostly inside at the defensive tackle position.

The 37 year old’s versatility will be a major plus in Miami, as EDGE rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips ended 2023 on injured reserve and their availability for the start of the 2024 regular season is in question. If they were to miss time to start the year, Campbell could complement rookies Chop Robinson and Mo Kamara, plus veteran Shaq Barrett on the outside. When Chubb and Phillips return, Campbell could quickly shift inside and form a dynamic duo with Zach Sieler at the defensive tackle position.
