Last year, the Detroit Lions had 7 Pro Bowlers. How many will they have in 2024?
The Detroit Lions enter 2024 with extremely high expectations, and for the first time in a long time, that feeling is felt nationally. All offseason, we’ve seen national rankings place the Lions roster among the top five in the league, and that goes for individual players, too. Just look at PFF’s positional rankings this year, and you’ll almost certainly find a Lion listed in the top-10—if not top-five—of every spot on the field.
That leads us to today’s Question of the Day:
How many Pro Bowlers will the Lions have for the 2024 season?
My answer: I already answered this for our Pride of Detroit Direct subscribers, so I won’t dive too deep into my answer here. Here’s what’s important to keep in mind: last year, the Lions had seven players earn Pro Bowl honors. Five of those (TE Sam LaPorta, OT Penei Sewell, C Frank Ragnow, EDGE Aidan Hutchinson, ST Jalen Reeves-Maybin) were all named to the original team. Two (RB Jahmyr Gibbs, WR Amon-Ra St. Brown) were added as alternates later.
With more attention directed toward the Lions these days, it’s entirely possible Detroit sees even more players named to the Pro Bowl Games this year. Guys like Alim McNeill, DJ Reader, Kerby Joseph, Brian Branch, and Alex Anzalone could get some of the attention that they’ve already deserved. Also, don’t forget that Kevin Zeitler was a Pro Bowler last year with the Ravens.
In 2023, the 49ers had the most player named to the Pro Bowl Games, with nine voted to the original roster (obviously, they didn’t end up participating due to being in the Super Bowl). I think the Lions will follow a similar trajectory this year. I’ll say seven Pro Bowl players again this year, however all of them will be named to the original team.
