Former WWE Champion Rey Mysterio was expected to sign with the WWE. However, news broke earlier this month that Mysterio has signed with Aro Lucha and has been given co-ownership of the upstart promotion as part of the deal.
If you recall, Mysterio was set for a meeting with Triple H at WWE headquarters a few weeks ago to finalize a new contract after his big surprise return at the Royal Rumble in January. However, that meeting did not happen due to the fact that Triple H needed to go to Saudi Arabia to finalize the new contract there that would see WWE produce live events.
Then it was revealed that Rey had suffered a torn bicep and was pulled from his match with Jushin Liger at NJPW Strong Style Evolved. Even though he didn’t wrestle at the event, the former WWE Champion did do an in-ring promo at this event and watched Will Ospreay wrestle in the contest that should have been his.
After the match, Mysterio received another challenge for a match from Ospreay, and then Marty Scurll came down and hit Will with his umbrella and pulled the mask off of Rey. Thus, it appears that Rey will be working at least three more matches in NJPW – against Ospreay, Liger, and Scurll.
Dave Meltzer talked about the situation on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio. Melzer believes that the matches will take place at the Cow Palace and probably one of them would be at Dominion and the final match at the Dontaku show in Fukui.
In regards to Mysterio going to WWE, it was noted that if Mysterio signs with the sports entertainment company, then he wouldn’t be on television until the late Summer or early Fall.
