During the most recent tapings of NXT UK, General Manager Johnny Saint announced that United Kingdom champion Pete Dunne would be defending the gold at NXT’s next Takeover in New York on WrestleMania weekend. Dunne demanded that his opponent be the UK brand’s newest superstar, WALTER. Later on, the two would have a non-violent contract signing where Dunne claimed he wanted this match to happen as much as the fans did.

The April 5th event will be the first time the United Kingdom championship has been defended on the main card of a U.S. Takeover since Dunne won the title from the inaugural champion Tyler Bate in 2017. (Dunne would defend against Johnny Gargano at Takeover Houston, but the match wouldn’t air until the following week’s episode of television.)
